The Banque de la République du Burundi was established in 1964, making this 2014 issue precisely timed to the institution's half-century mark. Burundi had gained independence only three years before the bank's founding, and the early decades of its operation were defined by chronic instability — including the 1972 mass killings and successive coups that made consistent monetary policy nearly impossible to sustain.
