The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale is the common central bank for six CFA franc-issuing states — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — each of which receives notes distinguished by a letter suffix. The "U" in P#209U designates Cameroon's allocation, though the notes are legal tender across the entire BEAC zone, a monetary arrangement that dates to the post-colonial franc zone agreements and has survived repeated political pressure from member states seeking monetary independence.
