5000 Francs

The Institut Monétaire Luxembourgeois replaced the Banque Internationale à Luxembourg as the note-issuing authority in 1983, a structural change that reflected Luxembourg's growing role as a financial center rather than any monetary crisis. This 5000 Franc note, the highest denomination in the IML series, was printed by Thomas De La Rue in London — a routine arrangement for smaller European states that lacked domestic printing infrastructure capable of meeting security standards.

Luxembourg joined the eurozone in 1999, and franc-denominated notes ceased to be legal tender in 2002. The relatively short issue window for this note, combined with its high face value and correspondingly lower circulation volumes, keeps surviving examples reasonably scarce in used grades.
