The Institut d'Émission d'Outre-Mer was a Paris-based colonial monetary institution established in 1966 to replace the Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer across the remaining French overseas territories — Djibouti, Comoros, New Hebrides, and French Polynesia among them. A single note design often circulated across multiple territories simultaneously, distinguished only by overprint or specific payable text, which makes precise attribution of individual examples genuinely important for cataloging purposes.
Printed by the Banque de France across a thirteen-year span, the series ran long enough to see several of those territories through independence, with Djibouti departing in 1977 and Comoros earlier still in 1975.
