5000 Francs

Algeria's highest-denomination note of the immediate postwar period, this 5000 Francs was printed by the Banque de France under the continued fiction of French Algeria as an integral economic extension of the metropole. The appointment of the Banque de France as printer — rather than a commercial security press — reflects the political insistence on institutional continuity at a moment when the colonial administration was scrambling to reassert normalcy after the disruptions of occupation and the 1945 Sétif massacres.

Marliat and Broutin were both established Banque de France workshop engravers. William Fel's design credit is unusual for this series and worth noting in provenance research.
