Issued on the 300th anniversary of the outbreak of Ferenc Rákóczi II's uprising against Habsburg rule, which began in 1703 when Rákóczi crossed the Carpathians from Polish exile with a force of Ruthenian peasants and rapidly drew in much of the Hungarian nobility. The war lasted eight years and remains the longest sustained anti-Habsburg military campaign in Hungarian history before its collapse at Szatmár in 1711, where Rákóczi's generals negotiated terms he personally refused to sign.
Rákóczi died in Ottoman exile in Rodostó in 1735. His remains were not repatriated to Hungary until 1906.
