Reverse description The reverse presents an allegorical effigy of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic, shown wearing her iconic Phrygian cap. In a striking artistic conceit by engraver Joaquin Jimenez, the letter 'L' of the word 'Liberté' dynamically transforms into a flight of birds ascending toward the cockade, the emblematic symbol of the Republic, which is thus recast as an open space of freedom. The composition embodies the Republican motto of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity through layered visual symbolism. The date '2017' and the legend 'Liberté' appear in the field. The design is executed in high relief, befitting the coin's status as a prestige gold issue.

Additional information

The "Marianne Liberty" series launched in 2013 as Monnaie de Paris's flagship bullion program, deliberately positioning France against the Anglo-American dominance of the gold bullion market — a direct challenge to the Britannia, Maple Leaf, and American Eagle. The 2017 issue is the fifth in the annual series, each year featuring a reinterpreted Marianne by a different artist.

At 85 grams of .999 fine gold, this denomination sits above the standard one-ounce market tier, which has kept secondary-market premiums unusually high relative to spot.
