| Additional information |
Masie Nguema Biyogo was the birth name of Francisco Macías Nguema, the first president of Equatorial Guinea, under whose rule the country collapsed into one of the most brutal dictatorships in post-colonial African history. By 1978, when this essai was produced, an estimated one-third of the population had fled or been killed. The ekuele currency itself was abolished following his overthrow by nephew Teodoro Obiang Nguema in August 1979, replaced by the ekwele and later the CFA franc.
Trial pieces from this issuer are exceptionally rare in any form. The Banco Central de Malabo had effectively ceased functioning as a normal institution by this point.
