Issued to honor Tigran Petrosyan, the ninth World Chess Champion, who held the title from 1963 to 1969 after defeating Mikhail Botvinnik in Moscow. Petrosyan was Armenian by birth — from Tbilisi, to a family of Armenian descent — and his championship remains a point of deep national pride. Armenia has consistently used its silver commemorative program to claim him as a cultural figure, this being one of the more prominent such issues.
The .999 fineness is notable; most Armenian silver commemoratives of this period used .925.
