5000 Dram Pan-Armenian Congress

The Pan-Armenian Congress commemorated on this issue was an effort to formalize ties between the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian diaspora — communities scattered across Russia, France, the United States, Lebanon, and elsewhere following the genocide of 1915 and subsequent waves of displacement. The late 1990s push toward organized diaspora engagement was partly driven by economic desperation: Armenia had spent the decade recovering from the 1988 Spentak earthquake, a brutal war with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, and a crippling energy blockade.

Armenia's commemorative silver program of this period leaned heavily on diaspora buyers, and this coin was effectively sold to the same community it depicts.
