Additional information

One of 38 coins in Armenia's Armenian Alphabet series, each piece corresponds to a single letter of the script devised by Mesrop Mashtots around 405 AD. The creation of that alphabet was a deliberate act of cultural and ecclesiastical insulation — Mashtots designed it specifically so Armenian Christian texts could exist independent of Greek and Syriac influence. The series, issued across several years, is unusual in that the complete set forms a coherent philological document as much as a numismatic one.

Ռ, the 26th letter, represents a trilled retroflex sound with no direct equivalent in most European languages.
