Additional information

Part of the Central Bank of Armenia's 39-coin series honoring the Armenian alphabet, each piece dedicated to a single letter. The alphabet itself was created by the scholar and theologian Mesrop Mashtots around 405 AD, commissioned to give the Armenian church independence from Greek and Syriac liturgical texts. Օ — "Vo" — is among the letters with no direct Greek equivalent, reflecting Mashtots's deliberate adaptation of the script to phonemes specific to Armenian rather than a simple transliteration of an existing alphabet.
