Part of the Central Bank of Armenia's 38-coin series honoring each letter of the Armenian alphabet, itself invented by the scholar Mesrop Mashtots around 405 AD — a deliberate act of cultural and ecclesiastical independence at a moment when Armenia sat squeezed between Byzantine and Sassanid Persian influence. The alphabet's creation allowed Armenian-language liturgical texts to displace Greek and Syriac, anchoring a distinct national identity that outlasted both empires by well over a millennium.
Թ (Tiwn) is the ninth letter of Mashtots's original 36-character script.
