| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Armenian national coat of arms occupies the centre of the obverse, depicting the eagle and lion supporters flanking a quartered shield, rendered in fine relief. The Armenian-script legend ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆԻ ՀԱՆՐԱՊԵՏՈՒԹՅՈՒՆ arcs along the upper periphery. The date 2013 appears to the lower left of the arms, and the fineness mark Au 999,9 to the lower right. The denomination 5000 DRAM • ԴՐԱՄ is boldly inscribed in the lower field, with the English legend REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA arcing along the bottom rim. |

Part of the Central Bank of Armenia's 38-coin series dedicating one issue to each letter of the Armenian alphabet, itself invented by the scholar and monk Mesrop Mashtots around 405 AD. The alphabet's creation was explicitly political — the absence of a native script had left Armenian religious and legal texts dependent on Greek and Syriac, making the culture vulnerable to assimilation under Sassanid and Byzantine pressure. Mashtots traveled to Samosata to consult the Greek calligrapher Rufinus before finalizing the letterforms.
Զ is the sixth letter, representing the /z/ sound.
