5000 Dong Vinh Long Detention Center

Canteen money issued by the Vinh Long Detention Center — a provincial facility in the Mekong Delta — for use by detainees purchasing goods within the institution. These notes circulated in a closed internal economy entirely separate from the State Bank of Vietnam's currency system. Vietnamese detention centers and prisons have issued such scrip intermittently since at least the 1980s, with denominations calibrated to the pricing of basic canteen goods rather than any fixed external standard.

Provincial scrip of this type rarely survives in quantity; most was redeemed, destroyed, or simply worn out within the facility.
