Studentski dom "Dobrica Stambolić" was a university dormitory in Niš, and this 1988 issue belongs to the scattered but genuinely interesting category of Yugoslav institutional scrip — internal currency produced by student residences, factory canteens, and workers' collectives that operated largely outside the national banking system. These tokens of exchange were a practical response to chronic small-denomination coin shortages that plagued Yugoslavia through the 1980s as inflation accelerated toward the hyperinflationary collapse of the early 1990s.
Dobrica Stambolić was a Serbian communist official; the dormitory named after him issued this scrip valid only within its own walls.
