Đorđe Petrović — universally known as Karađorđe, or "Black George" — led the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule beginning in 1804, making 2004 the bicentennial year this coin was struck to mark. The uprising is generally regarded as the opening act of Serbian statehood after nearly four centuries of Ottoman control, and Karađorđe's branch of the Petrović family later became the Karađorđević dynasty, rivals to the Obrenović line in a succession feud that shaped Serbian politics for the entire 19th century and into the 20th.
