Nāṣer al-Dīn Shāh's reign saw Iran increasingly entangled in competing Russian and British financial pressure, and large silver issues of this period were partly a response to chronic budget deficits and the costs of his repeated European tours. The 1873 and 1878 visits alone drained the treasury substantially, with concessions sold to foreign interests to cover the shortfall.
The 5000 Dīnār denomination corresponds to 5 Qirān under the decimal system formalized in 1876 — the same year this piece was struck.
