Issued to mark the Millennium and the Year of the Canh Thìn dragon, this piece was produced by the State Bank of Vietnam in extremely limited quantities for the collector market — domestic circulation of gold coinage in Vietnam has never been a practical reality, and these were sold directly through official channels at a significant premium. The Canh Thìn year carries particular weight in Vietnamese tradition, appearing once every sixty years at the intersection of the Heavenly Stem Canh and the Earthly Branch Thìn.
