Vietnam issued multiple 5000 Đồng notes across different series and political periods, so without a Pick number or date this entry can only go so far. The Socialist Republic's 1987–1991 banknote program emerged from a period of acute monetary instability — the 1985 currency reform had attempted to suppress inflation by exchanging old đồng at a punishing 10:1 ratio, and it failed badly, with inflation reaching several hundred percent annually by the late 1980s.
The 5000 denomination itself was a signal of how far purchasing power had collapsed since reunification. Notes from this period often show accelerated paper deterioration due to low-grade stock used during the production shortages of the Đổi Mới transition years.
