Brazil's transition from the Tesouro Nacional to the Banco Central do Brasil in 1964 created an awkward interim period in which existing printing contracts and plate stock were simply carried over. This note is a direct product of that administrative shortcut — the De La Rue plates prepared for the Tesouro Nacional series were reused without modification, with only the issuing authority text altered to reflect the newly established central bank. The result is a note that is institutionally 1964 but physically continuous with an older design lineage.
At just over 12 million printed, the run was modest for a high-denomination note in an economy already straining under inflation that would eventually force the 1967 cruzeiro novo reform, which redenominated at 1,000 to 1.
