Equatorial Guinea issued this pattern piece in anticipation of a state visit by King Juan Carlos I of Spain — a diplomatically significant moment given that the country had only gained independence from Spain in 1968 and spent much of the 1970s under the brutal dictatorship of Francisco Macías Nguema, who was overthrown and executed in 1979. The visit represented the first substantive rapprochement between the two countries after years of severed relations.
