Issued to mark the fiftieth birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in December 1977, this piece was struck the following year as part of a broader commemorative program that included multiple denominations in both gold and silver. Bhumibol was at that point already the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history still on the throne, having acceded in 1946 following the disputed death of his brother Ananda Mahidol — a case never officially resolved.
The 5000 Baht gold denomination was positioned at the top of the commemorative series, with mintage tightly controlled for presentation purposes rather than general release.
