Madagascar's dual-denomination system — ariary printed alongside francs on the same note — reflects the country's prolonged transition away from the CFA franc framework inherited at independence. The ariary had been declared the official unit as early as 1961, yet franc denominations continued to appear on circulating paper well into the 1990s because public familiarity with the old system refused to die quietly.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement in this series was part of a broader contract relationship with the Banky Foiben'i Madagasikara that covered much of its late-twentieth-century output. P#74A is distinguished from later catalogue variants by its signature combination.
