| Obverse description | The obverse features the Polish state eagle — the crowned white eagle with wings spread — rendered in high relief at centre, serving as the arms of the Polish People's Republic. The circular legend POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination ZŁ 500 ZŁ appears prominently in the lower field. The date 19 87 is divided on either side of the eagle's body. The mintmark MW appears in the lower field near the eagle's talons, identifying the Mint of Poland in Warsaw. |

Trial strikes — *próby* in Polish — from Narodowy Bank Polski in this period were produced in small quantities to test dies before final production approval, and were frequently struck in alternative metals to the intended circulation or collector issue. The 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics commemorative program generated multiple proof and trial variants; this nickel piece predates the official cupro-nickel issue by design approval sequence. The Fischer catalog's Polish proof and trial listings remain the most granular reference for these, as KM coverage of NBP próby is notoriously incomplete for the 1980s output.
