Poland issued a wave of commemorative silver during the 1980s to generate hard currency — these coins were sold abroad through Pekao Trading, the state export arm, while ordinary Poles had little access to either the coins or the foreign exchange they produced. The 1988 Calgary Winter Games gave the NBP another pretext for the series. Poland had competed at every Winter Olympics since 1924, with alpine and Nordic disciplines forming the core of its program.
The .750 fineness is notably lower than the .999 or .925 silver used by most Western mints for commemorative issues of the period — a reflection of Poland's constrained metal reserves under late Communist economic conditions.
