Reverse description A stylized modernist portrait bust of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish military and national hero, occupying the central field in bold low relief with a distinctly abstract artistic treatment. Kościuszko is depicted facing slightly to the right, wearing a military uniform with a flowing cravat and a cap with a feather or cockade. The legend TADEUSZ • KOŚCIUSZKO • curves along the upper periphery, with the birth and death years 1746 • 1817 continuing along the right side. The word PRÓBA (trial/pattern) appears vertically along the left inner field, identifying this piece as a trial strike.

Additional information

Trial strikes from Mennica Polska in this period were produced as internal approval pieces before final composition and design decisions were locked in for circulation issues. The 500 Złotych Kościuszko series, ultimately released in gold, went through multiple trial iterations in base metals — this nickel example being one such test pressing. Kościuszko himself was a politically convenient hero for the Polish People's Republic: a revolutionary figure whose anti-imperial credentials could be appropriated without ideological discomfort, which explains his recurring appearance on prestige denominations throughout the 1970s.
