The Yellow River Culture gold series, issued across the mid-to-late 1990s, drew on archaeological finds from the Qin terra-cotta warrior pits at Lintong — excavations that had been ongoing since the 1974 discovery by local farmers digging a well. The kneeling archer figure reproduced here is among the most technically sophisticated of the recovered warrior types, with the original clay figure retaining traces of original polychrome pigment that deteriorated rapidly after exposure to air.
China's gold commemorative program of this period was administered through the People's Bank and distributed heavily through overseas markets, particularly to collectors in Hong Kong and Taiwan in the years immediately surrounding the 1997 handover.
