Beschrijving keerzijde Central field features a naturalistically modeled snake in sinuous motion, its scaled body rendered in fine detail, with forked tongue extended, moving across the lower portion of the design. Above the snake, archaic seal-script characters reading 己巳 (the cyclical year designation for the Year of the Snake) are prominently displayed. The denomination 500元 is inscribed in bold numerals and characters at the bottom of the inner field, accompanied by a small seal mark. The entire central composition is enclosed within a delicate beaded border, itself surrounded by an elaborate outer decorative band of interlaced floral scrollwork with chrysanthemum blossoms and foliate tendrils in high relief.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued as part of China's Lunar Gold series, which the People's Bank launched in 1981 to generate hard currency through foreign collectors and investors rather than domestic circulation. By 1989, the series had found its primary market in Japan and Southeast Asia, where demand for Snake-year pieces was particularly strong given the animal's auspicious associations in those markets. The 155.52g specification places this at the five-troy-ounce format — the largest denomination struck in the 1989 lunar set.

Mintages for this issue were kept deliberately low, a policy the People's Bank maintained aggressively throughout the late 1980s to sustain premium pricing over spot gold.
