China's platinum bullion dragon coins occupy an awkward commercial position — priced above gold by spot, with a collector base far smaller than the silver or gold panda series. The 2024 issue continues a format the People's Bank has used selectively for platinum since the 1980s, when it first targeted Western investment markets hungry for an exotic alternative to the Platinum Maple Leaf. Platinum pandas and their zodiac counterparts never achieved that traction.
The Dragon year provided a predictable sales boost; demand for dragon-dated issues within Chinese diaspora communities consistently outpaces adjacent zodiac years.
