| Additional information |
Issued to mark the handover of Hong Kong on July 1, 1997, after 156 years of British administration following the Treaty of Nanking. The People's Bank produced several denominations in this commemorative series, but this five-ounce piece was the flagship. Mintages were tightly controlled and most examples moved directly into collections rather than any form of circulation.
KM#817 is occasionally confused with companion pieces from the same series struck in different weights — worth confirming against the 155.515g specification before attribution.
