| Obverse description | Central portrait of the celebrated Chinese painter Qi Baishi rendered in high relief, depicting the elderly master in a three-quarter bust view facing slightly left, wearing traditional Chinese attire and round-framed spectacles. A vertical Chinese inscription to the left of the portrait identifies the subject as '中国画坛大师齐白石1864-1957'. The legend '中华人民共和国' (People's Republic of China) arcs around the upper periphery of the field. The date '1997' appears in the lower exergue. |
