The Central Reserve Bank of China was a Japanese-controlled institution established in Nanjing in 1941 to manage currency in the occupied territories. Its notes were imposed on the population as a replacement for Chongqing-issued Fabi, a deliberate strategy to drain hard currency and destabilize Nationalist financial networks. The 500 Yuan denomination was high enough that ordinary transactions rarely required it — accumulation and speculation were the more common fates.
Printed by the Japanese firm Toppan Printing Co., the series circulated in an economy wracked by wartime inflation, which quickly rendered even large denominations inadequate.
