The Bank of Chinan (Jinan Bank) was a Communist-controlled regional bank established in Shandong province during the civil war period, issuing currency across the Liberated Areas as the People's Liberation Army consolidated territory in northern China. Its notes circulated in direct competition with — and as deliberate replacement for — Nationalist currency in areas falling under CCP control.
By 1948, hyperinflationary pressure on all Chinese currencies demanded increasingly high denominations. The 500 Yuan figure reflects that pressure. Within months of this note's issue, the Bank of Chinan was absorbed into the newly established People's Bank of China in December 1948, making the entire series short-lived by design.
