The Bank of Chinan (齊南銀行) was a Japanese puppet institution operating in Shandong province during the occupation period, and this 1945 note was issued in the final, increasingly chaotic year of the Pacific War. By mid-1945, Japanese military currency and puppet bank issues across occupied China were depreciating rapidly as supply lines collapsed and confidence in the occupation administration evaporated. Notes of this type circulated alongside a fractured mix of competing currencies in Shandong — Nationalist, Communist, and occupation issues all operating simultaneously in different-controlled districts.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference reflects its classification among Chinese regional and political special issues rather than central government emissions — a distinction that carries real weight for dating and attributing surviving examples.
