Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Taiwan's administrative return to the Republic of China following Japan's defeat in August 1945 — ending fifty years of colonial rule dating to the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895. The political sensitivity of the subject matter in 1995 was considerable: cross-strait tensions that year reached their peak during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis, when the PRC conducted live-fire missile tests in the waters surrounding the island in response to Lee Teng-hui's visit to the United States.
At five troy ounces of .999 fine gold, this was among the more substantial commemorative issues in China's 1990s precious-metal program.
