The Panda series launched in 1982, and by its 35th anniversary had become one of the most aggressively collected bullion programs in the world — particularly in Chinese domestic markets, where government-backed precious metal issues carry social and gift-giving weight that Western bullion markets rarely replicate. This bimetallic commemorative sits outside the standard annual Panda bullion issues, which since 2016 have been specified by weight rather than face value following the People's Bank's decision to abandon the previous gram-denomination system.
The gold-in-silver bimetallic format was deliberately chosen for the anniversary rather than adapted from any existing production run.
