Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features the large numeral '500' prominently displayed in the centre of the copper-nickel clad core, with the two zeros incorporating latent image microprinting that alternates between '500' and 'YEN' when viewed at different angles, serving as an advanced security feature. A sprig of bamboo appears at the top of the inner disc, flanked by two sprigs of tachibana (mandarin orange) positioned symmetrically at the left and right of the numeral. The lower arc of the nickel brass ring bears the reign era date in Japanese characters (e.g. 令和四年 for 2022), inscribed within the field. A beaded border separates the inner core from the outer ring, which carries the legends '500 YEN' and 'JAPAN' in Latin script consistent with the obverse.

Aanvullende informatie

Japan introduced a redesigned 500 yen coin in November 2021, the first major revision to the denomination in two decades. The update was driven almost entirely by counterfeiting concerns — the previous bimetallic design had become vulnerable to sophisticated fakes, particularly high-quality slugs produced in neighboring countries. The new coin incorporates three distinct anti-counterfeiting technologies simultaneously: a clad structure with two different metal compositions, microprinting along the edge, and a "bicolor clad" technique that creates a color-shifting effect visible at the joint between the ring and center.

The edge lettering alternates between two languages — Japanese and English — a first for any regular-issue Japanese coin.
