The denomination 500 YEN appears at the lower left of the ring, flanked to the right by the Japanese era date 平成25年 (Heisei year 25). A beaded border frames both the inner and outer elements of the design. |

This piece belongs to the 47 Prefectures Coin Program, a decade-long series launched in 2008 in which the Japan Mint issued two distinct 500 yen coins annually — one for circulation, one for collector sets — to profile each of Japan's prefectures in sequence. Yamanashi Prefecture, landlocked and dominated by the Southern Alps, was allocated its slot in the 2013 release cycle alongside Miyagi.
The bicolor clad construction used here was introduced to the 500 yen denomination in 2000 specifically to counter a surge in counterfeiting of the earlier nickel-brass issue.
