Obverse description Facing bust of Okuma Shigenobu, the prominent Meiji-era statesman and founder of Waseda University, occupying the central field against an intricate geometric background inspired by Saga Nishiki and Kashima Nishiki traditional textile patterns. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) arcs across the upper field, with SAGA and the kanji 佐賀県 (Saga Prefecture) inscribed to the left. The denomination 五百円 (500 yen) appears in bold kanji characters to the lower left of the portrait. A beaded border frames the entire design.
