Reverse description The reverse displays a stylized sixteen-petalled imperial chrysanthemum seal (菊の御紋) in the center, rendered in a formal, heraldic manner with broad rounded petals radiating symmetrically from a central boss. Surrounding the central emblem, Japanese legends are arranged in a circular fashion within the beaded inner border: the commemorative inscription '御在位二十年' (20th anniversary of imperial reign) appears at the upper arc, flanked by the country name '日本国' (State of Japan) and the denomination '500円' (500 yen) at the sides, with the date '平成21年' (Heisei Year 21) at the lower arc. Bullet-point separators punctuate the inscriptions. A continuous beaded border frames the entire reverse design.
