| 表面の説明 | The obverse features silhouetted figures of soccer players in dynamic poses set against an outline map of North and South America occupying the central field. The authority legend 日本国 (State of Japan) appears in Chinese characters along the upper periphery, while the denomination 五百円 (500 Yen) is inscribed in Chinese characters along the lower periphery. The design commemorates the 2002 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Korea and Japan, with the continental map serving as the primary artistic motif. |

Part of the Japan Mint's "History of World Coins" commemorative series, this 500 yen piece was issued to mark Japan's hosting of the 2002 FIFA World Cup — the first held in Asia, and the first co-hosted by two nations, Japan and South Korea. The Americas theme placed this coin within a broader set covering different regions of the world, released across multiple years beginning in 1999.
Nickel brass was the deliberate choice for the circulation-strike 500 yen denomination after persistent counterfeiting of the previous cupronickel type forced a redesign in 2000.
