Obverse description Within the copper-nickel centre, two Japanese Crested Ibises (Nipponia nippon) face each other in the central field, their long curved bills nearly touching, set against a backdrop of terraced rice paddies rendered in fine relief. The nickel brass outer ring bears the Japanese state inscription 日 本 国 (State of Japan) along the upper arc, the denomination 五 百 円 (500 yen) along the lower arc, and the prefecture name NIIGATA with its kanji equivalent 新潟県 across the centre of the design. The entire composition is enclosed within a beaded border at the inner edge of the ring.
