Reverse description The bimetallic structure is prominently featured, with the nickel-brass outer ring bearing the inscription JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM along the upper arc and 500 YEN 平成21年 along the lower arc. The copper-nickel centre depicts a stylised representation of an antique cast Mon coin, rendered in high relief with a central square aperture and the kanji characters 地方自治 (local autonomy) arranged in the four quadrants around the hole. Latent image security features are incorporated into the design of the central Mon motif. The reverse is bordered by a fine beaded rim consistent with the obverse.
