| Reverse description | Central device within the copper-nickel inner core depicts a stylized representation of an old cast Mon coin featuring a square central hole, with the four characters '地方自治' (local autonomy) arranged around it in the four cardinal positions, evoking the traditional design of Edo-period cast coinage. The surrounding nickel brass ring bears the legend 'JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM' along the upper arc, with '500 YEN' and the Japanese date '平成25年' (Heisei Year 25) inscribed along the lower arc. The design incorporates latent image security features within the square hole area. The entire composition is framed by a beaded border on the outer edge. |

| Additional information |
Part of the 47 Prefectures Coin Program launched in 2008, this Gunma issue belongs to a government-backed series releasing two prefectural coins per year over roughly two decades. Gunma was among the inland prefectures featured in the later phases of the program, which by 2013 was well into its run and drawing less of the speculative collector attention that had inflated demand for earlier releases.
