Obverse description The central field depicts a panoramic view of the historic gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Gifu Prefecture, their steeply pitched thatched roofs rendered in fine detail. Sprays of Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus) in full bloom occupy the lower field, serving as the prefectural flower. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) arcs along the upper border, with GIFU in Latin script and 岐阜県 in Japanese characters positioned centrally below the architectural motif. The denomination 五百円 (500 yen) is inscribed along the lower border, and the entire design is framed by a beaded inner border.
