Obverse description The centre features a dynamic depiction of armoured samurai riders on horseback, representing the Kacchu Keiba horse race of the Soma Nomaoi Festival, a celebrated traditional event of Fukushima Prefecture. The riders are shown in full gallop, rendered in fine relief against a textured field. The Latin legend FUKUSHIMA appears in the upper centre of the field, accompanied by the kanji inscription 福島県 immediately below. The upper border bears the national legend 日本国 (State of Japan) in spaced characters, while the lower border carries the denomination 五百円 in kanji, all enclosed within a fine beaded border.
