Obverse description The copper-nickel centre features a composite design emblematic of Fukuoka Prefecture. In the upper portion, the iconic Kintai-style arched bridge (Sefuri or a traditional multi-span structure) is rendered in fine relief, accompanied to its right by a spray of plum blossoms, the prefectural flower. In the lower portion, a traditional biwa (Japanese lute) is depicted in bold relief alongside a ripened ear of rice. The Latin legend FUKUOKA and the Japanese characters 福岡県 appear to the left of centre, while the country name 日本国 arcs along the upper rim of the nickel brass ring and the denomination 五百円 is inscribed along the lower rim, all within a beaded border.
