Obverse description Blue on green, orange and violet underprint with red seal and black serial numbers. An intaglio portrait vignette of statesman Tomomi Iwakura (岩倉 具視) is positioned at right. Inscriptions in Japanese identify the issuer as the Bank of Japan and denomination as five hundred yen, with manufacture credited to the Bank of Japan Printing Bureau.

Reverse description Blue on green underprint with a red seal. A large decorative flower rosette guilloche enclosing the denomination value appears at left, while a landscape vignette of Mount Fuji occupies the right side. The denomination and issuer name are rendered in both Japanese and romanized script.
