Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is depicted centrally in high relief, featuring a hydroelectric power station below a radiant star, framed by sheaves of rice tied with a ribbon bearing the state name in Korean script. The arms are flanked at the lower field by two stylized olive-like branches, their stems crossed and tied at the base. The Korean legend curves along the upper periphery, with the fineness indicator '999' and weight designation '1 OZ' appearing in the mid-field to either side of the arms. The date '1996' is inscribed in the lower exergual area.
